I cannot count the times in my life that people were
astonished that I am a religious person; a Christian to be exact. Most people’s
astonishment sounds something like this…“You don’t look like a Christian”.
I have met a lot of people who get similarly judged by their
looks alone.
“What does a Christian look like?” I ask that question a
lot, and everyone stumbles over their answer, or tries to take back their
previous statement. What I found is that people have an image of what a
Christian looks like, but they cannot describe how this person looks because
they don’t think about it, but they know it’s not you.
People will also come up to me and start a conversation
about the Bible verse tattooed down my arm. Again I don’t look like a Christian,
but I have a Bible verse on me, and so that intrigues them to ask about it. Luckily
I love to talk about religion (it’s one of my favorite subjects).
The funny thing is that this whole concept is strictly about
my look, and nothing else (not about my attitude, approach to life, how I treat
others, or anything else outside of my look). Most people genuinely like me.
Once I put them on the spot with my, “What does a Christian look like?” answer/response,
everything is good after that.
Don’t get me wrong…I have met hundreds or even thousands of
people in my life that don’t care one way or the other about how I look or what
tattoos I have; and if they do care, it has nothing to do with me being a
Christian.
What’s the point of this post? Nothing really, I just needed
a story to go along with my mustache picture, but it does show some of my Bible
verse tattoo to help make it relevant (I’m joking to see if you are reading
this).
Seriously…the moral of the story is that old saying about
judging a book by its cover sort of thing.
Stop judging others…it’s not your place to do so.
